Less than 24 hours after defeating Duntocher in the Lennox Cup, Dumbarton met Duntocher again in the 1st round of the Allan Medal.
The clubs last met in the Allan Medal in the 1st round during the 2016/17 season. On that occasion the match finished 7-7, with Duntocher progressing to the 2nd round after scoring a single in the extra-end to win 8-7.
Dumbarton got off to a good start with a steal of one in the first end. In the 2nd end Duntocher settled for a single after the skip relinquished his final stone. In the 3rd end David Shanks made good use of the hammer, drawing into the 4 foot to score a 3 giving Dumbarton a 4-1 lead. This lead didn't last long as Duntocher scored a 3 of their own in the 4th end, and Dubarton could count themselves lucky that it wasn't more as J. Paul had a draw to the 8 foot for a 4 that came up short.
The next 3 ends were extremely tight, with the skips relinquishing their final stone to settle for a single in each end. It's quite common for a skip not to play his final stone in the final end, but it's quite unique for this to happen 4 times in the same match when none of the ends are the final end.
The final end started with Dumbarton holding a slender 6-5 lead and Duntocher having the advantage of the hammer. The first objective for Dumbarton was to restrict Duntocher to a single to give them a chance of a draw shot challenge. This was initially achieved as J. Paul was forced into playing an extremely difficult draw to the 4-foot through a narrow port while facing 5 counting Dumbarton stones. The port proved to be just too narrow as the stone wrecked on one of the guards given Dumbarton a steal of 5 for an 11-5 victory and progression to the 2nd round for the first time since 2011.
Dumbarton's now meet Cadder in 2nd round on Tuesday 28th January. The last time these clubs met in the Allan Medal was in the 2008/09 semi final with Cadder progressing to the final. Dumbarton will be hoping for a reverse of that result on the 28th.
